Mill City Grows teamed up with UMass Lowell, Lowell National Historic Park and many other community groups to create an amazing spring festival and gardening conference for the whole family to enjoy!

The event was a festive community celebration of the beginning of Spring, highlighting the wonderfully diverse ways we all can help Lowell become a sustainable and environmentally conscious urban hub. Come experience a fun-filled day with something for everyone. Check out the event schedule here!

> Dynamic workshops to enhance basic garden skills, and connect residents with opportunities to grow and eat healthy foods

> A daylong seed exchange to share your favorite types of veggies and flowers, and take home something new for this year’s garden

> The Earth Day parade will feature hand-made puppets, live bands, dancers, hula hoopers, face painting, and much merriment! Starts at 12noon at National Historic Park Visitors Center and ends at Inn and Conference Center

> A resource fair with dozens of local and regional groups and businesses that support sustainability in our community

> Performances by the Angkor Dance Troupe, Johnny Fireseed, a rhythmic drum team and Hoola Hoopers

> A free Merrimack Valley Time Exchange community swap of gently used household items, toys, clothes, games; bring something to swap, bring something home, or both!

> Keynote presentation by Greg Watson, Director for Policy and Systems Design | Cuba-U.S. Agroecology Network at Schumacher Center for a New Economics

Special thanks to the Lowell Sustainability Council for making the Keynote video available

Mill City Grows’ First Annual Urban Growers Gathering!
Our 2015 Urban Growers Gathering was a huge success! Thank you to all of those who were able to attend and kick off the growing season here in Lowell.
We would especially like to thank our sponsors the City of Lowell and Middlesex Community College; and our Urban Growers Gathering partners YWCA of Lowell’s Green Team, the Gulf of Maine Institute, and Northern Middlesex Council of Governments.
A number of informative workshops and exhibits were held throughout the day by Mass Audubon, KaleYeah!, Solstice Initiative, New Entry Sustainable Farming Project, FoodCorps, the Green Dragons, the Merrimack Valley Time Exchange, and Next Step Living. We would especially like to highlight the keynote address given by Mareleen Manos-Jones, who shared an interesting presentation on the Monarch butterfly.
Delicious food samples were provided by many local businesses including Cedar’s HummusLife AliveChipotle, Golden Girl Granola, Trader Joe’s, Stonyfield Organic, Fresh Beets, Brew’d Awakening, and the Chowder Factory.
