In Massachusetts, the rate of food insecurity has sharply increased since 2019, driven by rising costs, ongoing economic instability, and federal policy changes, with the number of Massachusetts households experiencing food insecurity rising from 19% in 2019 to 40% in 2025.
Mill City Grows is a Lowell area food justice non-profit working to ensure all people have access to nutritious, locally grown food. Since 2011, Mill City Grows has evolved from a single community garden to creating a citywide urban food system. Mill City Grows has strengthened access to locally-grown, culturally connected produce, especially for those using food access benefits, and deepened partnerships with pre-K through graduate educators to further food justice and environmental education for school-aged youth.
I was drawn to this organization because of my passion for health equity (and gardening!) and I currently volunteer my time on the Mill City Grows Board of Directors. Please consider donating and supporting my fundraiser, and check if you can double your impact through an employer charitable matching program.
Please be sure to mention my name on the donation form so I can keep track of our progress! Just put my name (or a personal comment) in the “your public posted comment” section of the donation form. Thank you!
